Andrea's Unease Deepens

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 6967

"What happened?" Andrea asked Frederigo. "Someone decided that you would be better off dead. I might not have been in time to save you, but for your trick with the light, which made him hesitate just long enough. Then you fainted." "Who was the man, and why did he want me dead?" "I don't know. We didn't stop to have a chat. It was a case of kill or be killed. And there was nothing on him that would identify him."

That all sounded plausible enough, but she had an uneasy feeling that there was something important that Frederigo had left out. For one thing, why would a stranger want to kill her? Presumably he had been the unseen presence which she had felt following them. If he had trailed them, then he would have known that she had Fred to protect her, which would make an attempt on her life an extremely risky venture. What had the man hoped to gain from killing her?

She wondered how she had managed to conjure up the light. It wasn't a spell that she remembered Fritha, her maid, having ever taught her. Had she absorbed more from the old woman than she had consciously realised? Why had she fainted immediately afterwards? She hoped she wasn't so weak that the sight of Frederigo apparently about to attack her would have made her do that. Perhaps it had been the effort involved in casting the spell? But she hadn't been aware of any strain; in fact the magic word she had uttered had come to her lips without her even having been consciously aware of it.

There was one other possible explanation for what had happened, she realised, though it seemed farfetched. That was that her first impression on awaking had been correct, and that Frederigo really had been just about to stab her. Then the stranger had intervened, and had paid with his life for it. But she would have to be paranoid to believe such a thing, she told herself.

  1. Since it was now daylight, though gray and murky, they breakfasted and resumed their journey.
  2. Andrea found a small medallion on the ground, presumably torn from the stranger's neck during his fight with Frederigo.
