  1. Scott and Nick had been living together for the past decade.
  2. Nick had been affected by the Staircase Room and gone a bit cuckoo-bannana-nutcakes.
  3. This wasn't Nick but an incredible simulation.
  4. Two weeks of no showers has created a biological anamoly that carries Nick away.
  5. This is an alternate universe Nick, who had married Scott ten years ago.
  6. Both of them are hallucinating due to a natural gas leak in the Romance section.
  7. Time runs differently in the Library and for Scott, the ten years was just starting.
