"Just a minute," replied the receptionist. "I'll call her." She picked up
a phone, and Stacy could hear her informing Betty that she had a visitor.
The receptionist hung up and smiled at her. "She'll be out in a mintue."
Sure enough, a few seconds later, Betty showed up, and waved her over to
some conveniently located chairs where they could sit and talk. "Hi," she
said. "What's up?" Stacy fidgetted nervously. "Well," she said, "I'm really sorry to bother you at work, but I happened to be walking around the campus, and I thought I'd stop by and ask you..." She trailed off. Betty nodded encouragingly. "Well, the thing is, I've just discovered that there aren't any cabs to be had in Socorro, and I don't have a driver's license..." Betty laughed. "New Yorker!" she said. "Sorry. Go on." "Well, it's just that I don't have any way to get out to the VLA, and I wanted to ask if you had any ideas..." She looked at Betty hopefully. Betty looked thoughtful for a moment. "Well," she said finally, "listen, today's Thursday, right? I'm not working this weekend, so if you're willing to wait a couple of days, I could give you a ride..."
