Stacy looked at Paula in dismay. "But I thought you--" She checked what
she was about to say, realizing how it would sound. But, darn it, she'd
thought Paula was supposed to be some sort of big-shot scientist: top
expert in hemoglobin or some such thing, right? Surely someone like Paula
ought not to be hurting for money... Paula seemed to catch the gist of her thoughts, anyway, and smiled ruefully. "Yeah, I know. But I just bought this condominium, see, and there was the palimony to my ex-husband, and I was supposed to get a check in from the publisher on this textbook I've written, only it didn't come..." She sighed. "Yeah, well, I know: excuses, excuses. But the fact is, I've only got about $150 in the bank. And both my credit cards are maxed out. There's just no way I can manage a plane ticket. Not until my next paycheck, anyway, and that won't be for two weeks." "Two weeks!" Stacy exclaimed. "Oh, man. I really hate the idea of waiting two weeks. And I probably have no business asking you for money for a plane ticket in the first place, if you've got financial problems. Maybe we should just forget the whole thing..." "Wait a minute!" Paula replied. "Don't go giving up just yet. We've just got to think of a way to raise the money." She paused for a minute, obviously deep in thought. "Well," she said finally, "I hate to suggest this, but..."
