Stacy decided that by the time a cab could get to Socorro from
Albuquerque, the day would
be too far advanced to make it worthwhile going out to the VLA. So she
dialed Betty's number and, as she had anticipated - since Betty had
indicated
that she would not be home till the evening - got her answering machine.
When
asked to leave a message, she said: "Hi, this is Stacy. I'm sorry to
impose on you like
this, but I have a problem. Socorro isn't really designed for someone who
doesn't
have their driving licence with them. There doesn't seem to be a local cab
firm, so
I can't get out to the VLA and the Visitors' Center. If you have any ideas
as to how
I could get out there tomorrow, perhaps you could meet me in the
steakhouse? I'll be
eating there from 7:30 till say 9:00."
She put down the phone. She had five and a half hours to kill. What was she going to do with the time? Socorro didn't seem to have a lot to offer the tourist.
