Checking In (Psycho/The Shining Interlude)

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 6860

Belboz stood in front of the staircase, deciding whether or not to hazard the lethal-looking steps going up from the landing. Looks like termites to me,he thought. The magician began looking around for some sign of life. He walked around, noticing that everything was covered in layers of dust, from the ragged curtains to the fake plastic plants. The whole place was decked in something that was obviously intentioned to create a homey atmosphere, but had failed quite dismally "Hello?" Belboz tried, feeling somehow that he was being watched.

The returning echoes were warped oddly. "Great acoustics in here," he muttered.

He walked over to the desk. On the counter was a layer of dust so thick you could mount an archeological expedition in it. It was to regular dust what the Holy Grail was to a "No.1 Dad!" mug.

In the middle of the desk was a small dusty lump. Belboz, having the ordinary human capacity for idiocy, brought his hand down to hit the bell. Suddenly, with phenomenal aforethought, stayed his hand and did something unprecedented. He blew on the lump. Dust was stirred up into the air, blotting out his vision momentarily and sending into a fit of coughing. Looking down at the desk, he saw hundreds of spiders scurrying away. He screamed through his coughing, nearly choking on his own saliva.

During this harrowing experience, he flailed around wildly. His hand came down on the bell.

"Heeere's Normy!"

Meanwhile, Lord Fred was back in the farmhouse enjoying his bath. Splashing around with the rubber duck he'd found he began to croon an old folk song his mother had taught him.

"...I did it myyyyyyyyyy way..."

Behind him, an ominous shadow appeared, appearing to be wielding a knife threateningly. It came closer. REE REE REE REE REE REE, came a schreeching as the assassin raised the knife

Fred spun to confront his his would-be murderer, alerted by the wretched squealing of the floor. He grabbed his sword and leapt out of the bath shouting a war-cry.

Avery stood, shocked by his appearance, dropped the bloody knife and promptly shot out the door.

"Have at you!" challenged Fred, stepping to follow. The draft caught his attention, and he decided to put some clothes on.

Belboz looked up at the words. The individual standing behind the counter was a hard-faced troll, wearing bloodstained overalls and holding a gut encrusted wrench in one hand. "Well? You rang the bell, didn'cha? C'mon, can't y'see I'm busy?"

"Right...Normy," said Belboz nervously. "Um, I'm looking for a little girl, about yea high, blue flannel dress?"

"I ain't seen no little girl."

"Right. Well, she was supposed to take me to see her, um, Aunty Em."

The troll's features softened. "Avery? She was taking you to see Em? I guess it'll be all right then...Come with me," he said, starting towards the stairs.

Fred, now fully clad, pants included, walked purposefully out of the farmhouse, brandishing his sword, intent on finding out Avery's true intentions.

He found her sobbing in the grass not far off the yellow road.

She jumped when she saw him. "I'm sorry!" she whined, wrapping her arms around Fred and crying onto his shoulder. "She made me do it! Oh, please forgive me!" she bawled.

Fred attempted to shrug her off, without success. "What happened to the dwarfs? And Belboz?" He finally managed to shake her off.

"I don't know!" she lamented. "Aunty has them! Oh! I don't know what she'll do when she finds out!" New tears burst forth.

"Finds out what?" asked Fred.

"That I told you! Waaaaah!" At this point Avery became totally inconsolable.

A determined glint came into Fred's eyes and he began to walk strongly. Avery clinging onto his legs, screaming, "Don't go! Don't go!" Fred set forth up the road.

  1. Aunty Em! Aunty Em!
