"Before I establish contact," Vincent said, "I would suggest that you two
should pretend that you are mentally still just the naive bawdy girls that
you appear to be. Pronklezilch may be unaware of what Norla did for you.
Or if he knows of that, he may also know of what Xyllis did but be unaware
that I have managed to 'bring you back' once more."
"He must have worked out what Norla did," Astra pointed out. "Otherwise why should Freda and I have gone to Aqualaria? But hopefully his three captives will have been intelligent enough to give him the impression that we are still as Xyllis left us, attempts to undo it having failed." As before, Vincent made some passes over the surface of the mirror with his hands, whilst reciting an incantation. Presumably part of the incantation must have specified the desired "far end" of the viewer, but none of the three women could understand any of the words. Again as before, their own reflections disappeared from the mirror, to be replaced by the appearance of a swirling white cloud. This slowly cleared, to reveal Pronklezilch, seated at a desk in his study, with a smug smile on his face. Of his three captives there was no sign. "Ah, Vincent," he said. "You've been commendably prompt. Do we have a deal?" Vincent sighed heavily. "I'm afraid that we do." "Good. Then if you'll just send the two bawdy girls to me. I'm aware that you have placed wards on them so that I cannot just take them." "If you will first send the three whom you have taken back here." Pronklezilch laughed. "You know perfectly well that I won't do that. We will play by my rules. But I have no use for them, except as pawns in this game, so you can trust me to return them." Vincent sighed once more. "Very well then." he said. More gestures from Vincent, and another incantation that sounded like gibberish, and Freda and Astra found themselves:
