"Thanks for the advice," said Stacy, not sounding terribly grateful at all.
Betty sighed. "Listen," she said. "I really do hope things work out for you. In fact, I have to work tomorrow, or I'd offer to go out there with you myself. I enjoy visiting the site." She paused for a moment, as if debating with herself. "I'll tell you what," she continued, fishing a piece of paper and a pen out of her purse. "This is my phone number. If you need any help while you're in town, call me. I should be home in the evenings this week. Oh, and if the answering machine picks up, leave a message. I screen my calls." "Thanks!" said Stacy. Somehow, this unexpected kindness made her feel slightly better. "OK. Well, I really need to go pay my bill now. Enjoy your steak." She stood up, then turned back to Stacy. "Oh, and I was serious about the hat, by the way." And she walked off.
