It had been twenty years since Fred had killed the Dragon and
married Princess
Exotica. And for the last twelve of those years, Exotica had reigned as
Queen of the Great
Kingdom with Fred by her side as King. He had retired from dragon hunting
and was
happily overseeing the business of the Kingdom and raising three very fine
children.
Princess Elmeria was the eldest child at eighteen and she was her mother's pride and joy. Beautiful and terribly smart, she was heir to the throne and all within the royal court knew that she would be a wise and just ruler when it came her time to wear the crown. Prince Derik was seven, and a more rambunctious young boy you could not find in all the land. Trouble was his middle name, and often did Fred have to scold and punish his only son. But truth be told, Fred's pride at young Derik's fearless adventuring and insatiable curiosity knew no bounds. The youngest was Elizabeth. But that was about to change. Exotica was eight months along with a fourth child, and the five year old Elizabeth couldn't wait to see if it was a boy or a girl. She hoped it was a girl. She imagined a little sister would be much easier to boss around. It was during this time of peace and happiness however that the troubles began. None knew how great was the danger that the Kingdom was soon to face, but in time even the blind would see what was coming. And like a pebble casting ever widening ripples across a tranquil pond, the first hint of the great tragedy to come was the murder of a simple man in a lonely farmhouse. It fell upon the shoulders of a quiet Captain of the Guard to investigate the dark deed and to fix blame where it lay. He had no idea what he was about to get drawn into. It was a sunny summer's day that Captain Holm Locke stepped into the farmer's cold cottage.
