An Underground Waterway

Fred and Exotica emerged onto what someone from the present day might have
thought
reminiscent of an underground railway platform, the big difference being
that next to it was not a track but a slow-flowing canal. A boat similar
to a punt floated
alongside the platform, motionless apart from the slightest bobbing up and
down even
though it was not moored. Fred and Exotica
could simply step into it if they chose. There would be no way of
controlling it if
they did get in, though. There was no sign of a punt-pole or paddles.
"If we step aboard, it doesn't look as though it will take us anywhere," Fred said. "Unless it's magic, in which case we could find ourselves being taken off somewhere at high speed," Exotica pointed out. "If that happens, we could always jump out and swim for it." "Yes, but it's bad enough that I'm wearing such a silly outfit. Getting it soaking wet seems unlikely to be an improvement." Just then they heard voices not far away. Two or more people must have entered the entertainment room behind them. They might well be about to come through into the canal boat station.
