It wasn't the dragon. It was a lion-beast. Head of a lion, body of an overly large rabbit. Like centaurs, lion-beasts had the magic of being able to go anywhere a normal sized human could go.
Fred was just about to give the order to run when he saw a huge, black thorn through the beast's rear left paw.

  1. Fred manages to pull it out and gains the creature's loyalty.
  2. Astra manages to pull it out and gains the creature's loyalty.
  3. Velus still had an affilliation with the animal kingdom and calmed it enough so Fred could pull it out.
  4. "I say." said the beast. "Could one of you pull out this dastardly thorn out? I can't quite reach it myself and it's a bloody awful pain. There's a good chap."
