"I am the one who will decide how best to use my time, Captain," the
overseer said sharply. "This could be important. As you ought to be aware,
Allaria has been cut off from the outside world since not long after the
deposing of King Emry some five years ago. After that, anyone who entered
the country never came out again, and nor did any of the country's own
natives ever leave. We don't even know whether the country is still being
run by the one called Reaibn, or whether he in turn has been overthrown.
The
last people who managed to leave told strange tales that the land had been
gripped by a kind of insanity, but also that some amazing advances had
been made in many areas, fabrics being just one of them. Now this officer
of yours claims to have clothes from Allaria. I want to know how and when
she came by them, and anything that she can tell us about the current
situation there. The detail may need to wait till later, but the main
points should not delay us too much."
Astra blinked. It seemed that she had somehow gone forward in time five years - unless she had spent five years in a magical sleep when she had thought that she had only slept for one night. She was probably the last person ever to succeed in leaving Allaria, if the overseer did not know that Reaibn had been about to have Lord Frederigo crowned king. "My visit to Allaria was five years ago," she said. "So I am afraid that I cannot tell you anything that you do not already know." Which was not quite true, but she saw no reason to assist Hespan in its intelligence gathering.
