"That sounds intriguing," Astra said. "I do not recall Checkers speaking
of any Glider magic. Whether that was because she was being discreet,
because she did not know about it, or simply because the subject never
came up, I cannot say. I suppose that it is just possible that she
mentioned it in passing but that I have forgotten. An awful lot has
happened to me recently."
"It seems as though it could be in both our interests to find out more about the Red Dolomite League," John said. "The best way to do that, at least as a first step, would be through your friend, if only she could be found and brought here." "As I mentioned, there were more in our party, and I should like them to be brought here too, if that could be managed. I don't like the thought of their having been sold into slavery. As well as Checkers, there was a nobleman - Lord Fred - from a neighbouring country to my own, a gnome called Solbert, a woman called Sartoma, and a sailor whom we picked up en route called Jan." (Astra had decided it might be better not to mention that Sartoma was a mage.) If they show their good faith by rescuing my friends, Astra thought, I will know that it is right to throw in my lot with them rather than with that other mage, however tempting his offer seems. "Do you know the name of the ship that the others in your party were transferred to?" John asked. "That would make it much easier to trace them."
