The river that Astra could hear must almost certainly run along the foot
of the slope, she thought, though the trees were too thick for her to
catch a glimpse of it. After tethering the horses, she explored to either
side, hoping to find a spot where the slope was gentle enough and the
trees and undergrowth were sparse enough for her to lead the horses down,
even if riding down would not be possible.
To the left, the escarpment became even steeper, until before long she found herself at the top of a cliff. That did at least mean that the trees no longer obscured her view of the river, several hundred feet below. It was quite a sizeable feature. It ran close to the foot of the cliff, but there was flat land for a mile or so on the far side, with beyond that hills, and then snow-capped mountains in the distance. There must surely be settlements at intervals along the river's banks. She could see none from her current viewpoint, however, as the lay of the land meant that only a mile or two of the river was within view. One thing worried her. What was that snow-capped mountain range doing there? She could almost think that she had somehow turned through 180 degrees and was facing the Shreken, but the position of the sun in the sky told her that was not the case. It was becoming harder and harder to maintain the hope that she was where she ought to be.
