A Tall Story

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 64947

"In theory I was Gilder's house guest, but in practice I was his prisoner," Astra said, feeling that she could trust her listeners and with her tongue a little loosened by the wine that she had had. "I was not allowed to leave the palace. So, before I could be coerced into marriage, one night I made my escape."

"Was that very difficult?" Jegar asked.

"It was not easy, but not nearly so difficult as I had feared."

"So you didn't have to fight your way past any of the guards?"

"No, which was just as well, since they were armed and I was not - at least, not initially. But I had a bit of luck for, just when it looked as though I would probably be captured by two of the guards, they quarreled and killed each other." [40198]

Jegar could not help but raise his eyebrows. Gilder had not made up the death of the two guards then, something that he would not have put entirely beyond him. Could he believe Astra's story of how their deaths had occurred? He knew that it was not unusual for guards to fall out, but for it to go so far as a fight to the death was rare. Even in such a fight, one of the two men usually survived. And the odds against the two deaths being so well timed to assist her escape must be very long indeed.

  1. He decides that he believes her.
  2. He decides that he cannot believe her. He would sooner that she had said that she had killed the men in a fair fight.
  3. He asks further questions.
