Not as big as surprise as she had feared...

"Gendo Akari would have ordered your death and disappearance if I told you the truth about me." Rei said softly. "That is something I did not wish. But now . . .I fear it is time for you to know a bit more about me. Something that until that day with the Angel I had not known myself, really!"

True, at that period of time she also did not wish to reveal such things about herself because she had been ordered against doing such things by Commander Gendo Akari. Now she knew the truth about Gendo not being worthy of her loyalty (and affection), but even back then she also had not wished to endanger her friends (few that there were back then). Thus the silence on her part back then. She now tells Fred about her dual genetic heritage (now expunged due to Celestrial intervention). No danger of Second Impact now, even if she had wished to bring it about. She made sure to say that she did not wish to bring it about, by the way.

Now, she wishes to share all because . . . friends are honest with each other, right? Right?! She wanted Fred to know the truth about her, in her own words before he found out from . . . other sources floating about here. Still, she dreads this.

"Please listen and understand, Fred!" Rei whispers to herself before plunging ahead.

(Author's Note: the next part about Rei is built upon speculation by myself and other fans from vague hints left within the anime series proper.).

She goes onto explain how she had been slated, initially, to be one in a whole series of made to order pilots for the Eva units, fresh off assembly line if need be. It was the Dummy Plug system we speak of, if you must know. However, due to technical hitches that had only been ironed out recently, the Dummy Plug system had been stalled from being implemented, and thus the need for the "regular" human pilots. That said, the system still had it's uses. In addition to that, when Rei (or Kaworu Nagisa, aka Tabris) died, their soul got "sucked" down into some kind of catch system, where it was "downloaded" into yet another awaiting empty shell. Thus, if nothing else and all the OTHER more . . . normal EVA pilots bit it, they still would have Rei because her soul (the only term, mystical or not, that would apply here) would be piped back into a new body, ready to go.

They would also have a Rei to pilot an EVA and her to serve as an tool to bring about Instrumentality under Yui's . . .. .but we've been over that already, eh?

Yeah, Rei's soul would never be free to go into the Here After . . .always getting downloaded again and again into a new clone body.

Or at least part of her soul got downloaded into the awaiting empty shell. Hang on, this one is a real twist! See, the real twist here happens to be the fact that without some kind of soul within the monstrosity known as EVA, the war machines just won't move. EVA Unit 01 had within it the soul of Yui Akari up until recently. EVA Unit 02 had the soul of Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu until events freed her. With Unit 00, it was a bit different. With the other Units they had the souls of the pilot's mothers within, making them usable. Unit 00 is different from the others (or had been up until recently . . . all of the Units are now so much dead matter). And no, in this case the soul who got "sucked" into Unit 00 wasn't Rei's mother. Rei (and Reika for the matter) had no biological mother in the traditional sense and besides that, the closet thing they each had to mothers was either in use in Unit 01 (Yui Akari's soul) or hanging on a red cross deep within the bowels of NERV HQ (the Angel Lilith) providing LCL and such for the needs of NERV. It wasn't some other unlucky technician who got sucked inside, either.

It happened to be the "Rei I" portion of her soul (which got reintegrated into her being) had been the driving force for her Unit 00. Fred figured that the same went for Reika over there (though he was at a loss at how such a thing had been possible).

According to what he'd learned back on his old world and his time in his new one (back where "his" Tokyo-3 dwelled), current theory was that there could be only one sould per body . . .unless it was a "mass mind" entity deal. Which, by the way, Rei and Unit 00 did not qualify as.

Frankly, a lot of inconsistencies had cropped up over the years. One of them had been with Rei's condition, made all the more murky and unsolvable due to the fact that the head experts in the field on that had been . . .hung. No help with that unless anyone from Fred's world felt like hitting up the Akagis on the matter. What had been even MORE puzzling was how NERV could have even AFFORDED to built all those EVA units, much less getting them to operate correctly. That last part was due to the changes in physics (ala Torg, which hadn't been shared with the wider public of Tokyo 3 of Fred's world and that world's general public) which we won't go into right now. Just let it be said that while some of the things that went into creating EVAs could still be done, it was through horribly expensive alchemist means. Then there was that silliness with . . . ah NEVERMIND! Lots of inconsistencies and let that be all of it for the EVAs (may they rot in peace)!

"I'll . . . get back this axiom wash stuff here in a bit," Fred blinks, head whirling at that explanation. "But as for being a clone . . . Well, kind of figured on something like that."

He gestures at the various people about who are sporting looks similar to Rei's and at two Shinji Akaris (one fourteen years old goggling his thiry something year old counterpart).

"Fred, that's an analog, " Rei chides, only to pause when Fred holds up a hand and shakes his head.

"You remember that time right after the 15th Angel where Shinji got absorbed into his EVA unit?" Fred asks softly. "Where he came back, flesh and blood despite the Entry Plug spilling all it's contents . . . .including the liquid that Shinji's body had turned into upon being absorbed into the Unit?

Rei blinks in surprise at me having learned of that one.

1. "Let us just say that in the two decades since you disappeared I learned of a few of the more . . . .interesting happenings within NERV," Fred says with a small smile.
