Astra smiled, rather alarming some of the more timid men with the mouthful
of very sharp teeth that she revealed. "Wouldn't that be rather like
setting an alcoholic to guard a brewery?" she asked. "As has been pointed
out, dragons have a love of precious metal. In fact 'love' is really too
weak a word for it. It's true that no-one else would be able to steal your
bullion, but I'm not sure that I could resist the temptation myself.
Indeed, I am almost certain that I could not." Then she thought: Why
did I say that? I should have agreed with their idea and then made off
with their bullion. I suppose I still retain some of my human scruples.
For how much longer, I wonder?
John had laughed in response to her initial remark, and when he translated what Astra had said into the local tongue most of the others laughed too.
