The Trap is Sprung

The trap will be three paces by three paces, and two paces deep. I shall have to build it with care, to ensure that I can get out.

Day 24 Part of the work is done. The trap is now as deep as my waist. I am trusting that the bear is not going to understand what I am doing, and will fall into this trap. The digging is very hard. I am lucky that I have plenty of good smoked fish and fresh water. The work is good for me, and I slept very soundly last night, even though the hooting noise of some animal continues.

Day 25 The trap is now deep enough to catch any animal that I can think of. I do need to square off the sides to make them sheer. I do not want the bear to climb out of the trap! One of the other traps was raided last night, and more markings have appeared on the trees.

Day 26 The trap is good enough, I hope. I have covered it with a thin cover of dead brush and weeds. I have placed some wild honey that I found at the bottom of the trap - it should keep better than fish. If the bear is caught, I should be able to kill it. This would be a trophy that my uncle would appreciate. And the oil and meat of the bear would fetch a good price, not to mention the fur.

Day 27 No luck. I need to find a way to chase away the owl, or whatever it is. The hooting noise is slowly driving me mad. It keeps me awake, and thinking about the bear. He is hard to find, though.

Day 28 An eventful day! The creature has been trapped. And I was much mistaken. It was not a bear, after all. This morning I heard something snap, and then heard a crashing noise as something fell though the brush cover of the trap. I rushed outside with my knife, in order to kill the "bear." Imagine my surprise when I found out that my bear was really a

1. human being. Dirty, ragged, and scared, but another human being all the same.
2. behemoth. I am the first of my people to see one of these fantastic creatures.
