The sound of running feet stirred the Shoggoth out of its moment of
ecstasy. Three
armed priests stood at the entrance to the room. One of them knelt and
began to wretch,
while the other two watched in wide-eyed horror. "Who disturbs my altar?" the Shoggoth sneered. "Is it the bloodless apostles of the Old Religion? Away with you, powerless ones, lest you've come to kneel and kiss the feet of your new God! The lead priest opened his mouth as if to say something, but what came out instead was an inhuman roar of anger and grief. He threw himself bodily at the Shoggoth, and it barely stepped aside in time to sink its sword into the priest's stomach. "Damn you..." the priest coughed, spitting up blood. "...for this monstrous sin... there can be no forgiveness..." "Amen," the Shoggoth nodded sagely, twisting the sword in the man's stomach before pulling it out. "Now, let us bow our heads and prey..." The other priest charged then, silent as he aimed a mace blow at the Shoggoth's chest. It ducked and slashed out at the man's knees, but he stepped back just in time, robes flowing. The Shoggoth followed up with a spastic belly flop swinging his axe sideways on its chain, but the wiry priest dodged that too. He then jumped forward to smash the Shoggoth's head with a two-handed mace blow, but the demon rolled aside and rose up laughing. "What's the matter, quiet one? Have you taken a vow of silence?" the demon taunted. "It won't help you against one who has taken a vow of... violence! Hahahaha!" "I will not let rage blind me," the priest intoned. "I will deliver the Siblings' justice to the one who has desecrated their sacred altar." "Jinx!" the Shoggoth laughed, taking advantadge of the man's split-second pause to seemingly flow forward and bury his sword to the hilt in the man's heart. He fell without a sound. "Stupid sacrificial lambs," the Shoggoth said, kicking the dead body. "It's not enough! The birth of my evil dominion demands a greater sacrifice! Bring me all of them! All of the believers! Let them all come to taste the baptism of my steel! I shall erect a new temple with their bones and raise it higher and higher till it blots out the sun's foul light!" "It can't be, no!" cried the retching priest, crawling forward on all fours, blinded by his tears. "Rhom and Rham, undo this horror! Save me, shelter me, redeem me! Yaaugh!!" "I'll give you salvation, brother," the Shoggoth chuckled, raising his axe.
