Fred turned to stand his ground, his blade shimmering in the moonlight.
Exotica cowered behind him, bleeding and whimpering in pain. There was no
way he could get her to cover in time. He watched as the foul beasts dove
for them. He waited, tensed and ready, fully prepared to give his life
defending his LeigeKing's only child.
Exotica could only watch helplessley as her father's handpicked dragonslayer stood above her, preparing to defend her to the death. She had rarely thought of Fredrigo D'Honaire while at the royal court of Camelyn. Oh, she had met him once or twice, and even danced with him at a royal banquet. Duke Dredrik was a valued advisor to her father as well. But she had always though the idea of dragon slaying to be... distateful. That is, until she had become a prisoner of the dreaded dragon herself. Then, she and her fellow slaves had often pined for someone to come and kill their captor and tormentor. One of the creatures fell to the ground, a crossbow bolt through its breast. Diana. Fred realized. The other kept coming, though, and was soon upon them. As before, the creature attacked with the talons on its forelegs. Fred swung his blade in an upward arc, cutting into one of the forelegs while not removing it completely. He took a blow to the chest, but the talons were unable to penetrate his armor. The beast cried out in anger and pain, and prepared to lunge again, it's large wings beating furiously. Fred swung again, landing a bludgeoning blow with the side of his sword on the creature's head. The enraged creature leapt forward, battering Fred, knocking him to the ground and causing a gash along the right side of his face. His sword ended up a few feet out of reach. The beast was upon him, pinning him down and roaring in triumph. I'm sorry, Highness Fred heard a sharp whistling sound, and was suddenly splattered with the creature's warm blood. Diana had gotten off a second shot, just in time. The beast reared up on it's hind legs, the arrow protruding from it's chest. It wasn't a killing shot, but it was enough for Fred. In one smooth motion, he rolled to the side, grabbed his sword, and thrust upwards as the beast was falling back to all fours. His blade pierced through the lower jaw and into the creature's brain, killing it instantly.
