"Never mind the law," Astra thought back. "Won't it drive Fred insane too, if you give it to him? I think that the best thing that you could do with that marble would be to destroy it. The power it conveys is bought at too high a cost. It doesn't just drive its bearer mad. Through its effect on the appearance of the moon, it seems to drive everyone in Allaria mad to a greater or lesser degree. And some - not many, I grant you - become unhappy mad rather than happy mad. I'm thinking of Princess Exotica, who seems to be frightened even of her own shadow."

"No, I can't destroy it. It won't let me."

At this point the moon/Eye dipped below the horizon, and the connection was broken.

Astra pondered for a long time on what she should do. How will I know if my decision is right? she asked herself. I've looked on the Eye now, as I was warned not to do, perhaps for too long. Maybe my sanity is already suspect.

Eventually she decided:

  1. That if Reaibn intended to bequeath the marble to Fred, then she had to return and persuade him not to use it, and preferably to destroy it.
  2. That it was unlikely that she could achieve anything by going back, and that she should continue on her journey out of the country.
  3. That she wanted to paint her face and hands red and white, as the townsfolk did. [60370] It would be rude and stand-offish not to do so. And it would be fun.
