The two fairies looked at each other. They had something in common: both
were female, blue-skinned, and had wings and pointed ears. But there were
also major differences. Most importantly, the one who was now called
Frita, at a little under three inches tall, was rather less than half the
size of the newcomer. The new arrival's hair was dark blue, while Frita's
was multicoloured. And whilst Frita wore a gossamer dress, the giantess -
as she seemed to Frita - incongrously wore armour.
"Where am I?" the newcomer asked dazedly. "Well, well," a disembodied voice said. It sounded amused. "I wasn't expecting this. Welcome, my dear. You are in a chamber within the Southern Caves, as the Allarians call them. This is Frita, who was until recently a man called Fred. I have a task for her, if she is willing to undertake it. Perhaps you might care to assist her? But first I suppose introductions are in order. You would be?" The new arrival had not been startled to hear the voice. Her magic had told her that there was some presence in the chamber, even if she could not see it or tell precisely what it was. She sensed that whatever it was, it was not to be trusted. Its references to the "Southern Caves" and to "Fred" seemed familiar to her.
