Fred decided that the truth - that he had failed in his quest and killed a
defenceless child in the process - would be better kept to himself. He
hoped that Astra, who knew much of the true story, [56177] would not
contradict him if he made up something more creditable to himself.
He told Exotica: "I entered the Southern Caves to hunt for the dragon. I hadn't got very far when I encountered a beauteous, naked, red-headed maiden chained to the wall of the tunnel. It proved to be Princess Astra of Aqualaria." Astra raised her eyebrows at this, since this was not how she had met Fred, but she said nothing. Fred continued: "Naturally I freed her. Not only was it my duty as a knight, but it would surely greatly improve relations between our two countries if I could rescue her. Of course I had to put my mission to kill the dragon on hold until I had brought her to safety. Which I duly did for, as you will no doubt have guessed, this is none other than Princess Astra." "That wasn't all that long a story after all," Exotica remarked. "Your actions seem to have been very praiseworthy. There's something that I don't quite understand, though. If this is really Princess Astra, then why didn't you take her to her home rather than head in the opposite direction and bring her to Caemlyn? And what is she doing naked in your hotel room? She must have a room of her own, surely, not to mention clothes? After all, it's the best part of a week's journey from the Southern Caves to Caemlyn, and she could hardly have remained naked all that time. Come to think of it, if you've really been as far as the Southern Caves then I can't see how you could possibly have returned here so soon. After setting off on your quest, you didn't simply sneak back into Caemlyn as soon as it got dark and hole up in this hotel room with this floozy, by any chance?"
