Fred saw that the woman was young, very attractive, and dressed in
tattered rags that left little to the imagination. Very oddly, though, she
had a tube of some sort stuck between her lips, and smoke was drifting up
from the end of it that was furthest from her mouth.
Cigarettes and cigars were unknown in Allaria, and Fred thought that - unlikely though it might seem - the woman must be unaware that the tube was alight. He had kept a large gourd full of water by his side, just in case his fire got out of control. Picking it up he dashed up to the woman and poured the water over her head. "You idiot!" she spluttered. "What the Hell do you think you're doing?" This wasn't the welcome that Fred had envisaged. "But your tube was on fire!" he protested. "I may have saved your life. Aren't you going to thank me?"
