It would have been bad enough killing any innocent victims. That the
victims were - in a sense - herself only made it harder. Many times Astra
had wondered whether even such a necessary end could justify such terrible
means. Her mother and Myr'din had assured her that it did, but they
weren't the ones who had to do the killing.
On several occasions she had had a terrible nightmare during her sleep, and had woken up screaming, terrifying poor Aephix Tes'Eestra. Once awake, she could not remember what she had dreamt, which was perhaps merciful. But now, thankfully, she was nearly finished. Only one more life - one more death - was required. According to Myr'din, at least, though so far she was not sure that she felt any stronger or any smarter. She hadn't needed to be to defeat the other Astras; the blinding light coupled with the element of surprise had been sufficient. Would the last killing really turn her into the superwoman that was needed to defeat the DragonMage? What if Myr'din had been wrong, and all the slaughter had been for nothing? But she dared not think of that possibility for long, for if it should turn out to be the case she felt that she would go insane.
