"You've been gone for five years," Alex explained. "I'm twenty-three now. It's taken that long for me to persuade them to let me go. Mother said that having lost one daughter, she didn't want to lose another. Of course, we all thought that you must be dead, as we hadn't heard anything in all that time, but I thought that at least I could try to kill the dragon in revenge."

"But that's ridiculous," Astra objected. "I was only the dragon's prisoner for a matter of days, certainly nothing like five years."

"I thought that you didn't look any older," Alex said. "Nevertheless, in the world outside five years have passed."

  1. Astra has to accept that this is so, even though she can't explain it.
  2. They manage to come up with an explanation.
  3. Astra is suspicious. Alex still only looks eighteen, rather than the twenty-three that she claims is her age. Is Alex lying? If so, why?
