Fortunately a bend in the passage meant that the dragon only saw Fred at the last moment, whilst he had a little warning of its approach by the noise that it made. (Such a big creature could not move completely silently.) Before it had a chance to use its fiery breath against him, Fred struck up with his sword at its vulnerable belly, one of the few spots not protected by scales. Then he dived aside, to avoid being crushed as the mortally wounded creature collapsed. That also took him out of the way of the one breath of flame that it managed before it died.

Fred managed to extract his sword, with some difficulty, cleaned off the dragon's blood with a rag that he kept for the purpose, and then returned to the Princess, whistling nonchalantly in an attempt to disguise the fact that he was shaking all over.

"You were wonderful!" she said, adoration in her tone. Velus (back in his rightful form of a teenage boy [200-1]) added his congratulations.

  1. Unfortunately the theory that Exotica's chains, being enchanted, would disintegrate when the dragon died seemed to be incorrect. She was still held fast.
  2. Exotica's chains had disintegrated. So had Astra's, they found, when they went back for her. So Fred, the two naked princesses and the naked teenage boy headed for the exit from the caves.
