Lord Fred takes a moment to look in the spell book and see what was what with the old man. A few judicous manipulations of curse spells reveals the dead wizard to have been a highly evil man, one who had killed three bar-maids just for the sin of jostling him.
While Lord Fred was relieved that the man he had so carelessley killed was an evil man, he still berated himself for the lack of thought. Why had he allowed murderous impulses to overwhelm him? Fred decides to see if the spell book could help him answer that. The book snapped shut, spun around three times and vanished from sight.
Approximately ten minutes later, the passageway ended in a landing. The path continued, switchbacking down the wall to the ground. The ground was a pit of sand, about three hundred yards square. A manually constructed wooden-slat bridge had been built a foot over the surface of the sand. On the other end the way continued through a torch lined hallway. Fred could see only a dozen feet of the other way, though.
