The girls wandered over to investigate the trees. The crew were all too
busy shifting water casks to pay them any attention. As the girls drew
closer to the grove, they saw that what had from a distance appeared to be
rubies were very attractive red fruit. "Do you think that it's safe to
eat?" Thelma asked.
"Well, that bird seems to think so." Sigourney pointed at a pixilated woodpecker which was greedily eating its fill of the fruit. "I'm going to risk it," Louise said. "The diet we've had on board ship, mainly biscuits and salt beef, has been very monotonous, and I'm sure that some fruit would do me good." Soon all three girls were eating their fill. Their internal temperature was just slightly too low for the seeds to sprout within them; they were resistant to digestion and would be passed through unaltered. But the sun had already done its job of fermenting the juice, and soon the girls began to get tipsy. "Thesh berriesh are delishus," Sigourney slurred. Meanwhile the crew had problems of their own.
