Astra had quickly realised that the impression that Sabok had given her
that Jegar was a lonely man was false. He might be a widower, but he had
plenty of family to provide him with company. Nevertheless it seemed
that he was glad to have the three of them staying the night, and she was
enjoying herself too much to be angry at Sabok for his minor deception.
She felt more relaxed than she had done at any time since going on the
run, and was taking a full part in the increasingly lively conversation.
Meanwhile Jegar had a problem. At the customs office they had a few days ago received a copy of a letter from Governor Gilder of Corona, which he had sent to almost every official in Hespan. It had warned that a dangerous criminal, a murderess, was on the run, and that they should look out for her. Jegar was in little doubt that this must be the woman. Her height and beauty matched the description in the letter, and she was clearly a foreigner. Though her hair was white, it was clearly growing out red at the roots, and this also fit. Gilder had a poor reputation. Also Jegar found it hard to credit that Astra could really be a dangerous criminal, based on his brief acquaintance with her. But as a customs official, someone involved with a branch of law enforcement, wasn't it his duty to have her arrested? Should he not have faith in the law? If she was innocent, then the investigation following her arrest ought to show that, and nothing bad would happen to her. Jegar wished that he could have more confidence that such would be the case. And it would feel like a betrayal to turn in someone who had entered his house as a guest.
