The name of Gog was soon being widely cursed by the couriers, even amongst
those who were working for the same outfit as he was, for it was widely
assumed that he must be to blame for the crackdown. By the end of the day,
four consignments had been confiscated and three couriers were in the
tower. Three rather than four, for the Davar had a stroke of luck with the
fourth courier, and had been sufficiently grateful to let him go.
When the man was being interrogated at the customs gate, the Davar realised that the man's accent and his turn of phrase reminded him of Astra's. "Are you an Aqualarian, by any chance?" he asked him. "Yes," the courier said, deciding that it would not be wise to deny it but hoping that the Davar would not deal more harshly with him because he was a foreigner. "Does the royal court of your land contain a lady by the name of Astra?" "Do you mean Princess Astra?" "I suppose so." It seemed that Astra might be a person of even more importance than he had been assuming. If the rest of her story was true, he could understand why she might have thought it wiser not to mention that she was a princess. He went on: "Can you describe this Princess Astra?" "I've never seen her myself, but she is said to be tall and very beautiful. Her red hair is supposed to be especially notable." So Princess Astra existed. That this woman was calling herself Astra did not necessarily mean that she was the princess, of course, even though she seemed to match the description. "Has the princess by any chance mysteriously gone missing within the last few weeks?"
