The horse was clearly in pain, and Andrea's first concern was
for it rather than for herself. The kindest thing to do would be to
put it down. Though she had a sheathed dagger
on her belt (no lone
traveller would dream of being without a weapon of some kind), she
found that she was too squeamish to cut the horse's throat herself. So
she looked around to see if there was anywhere she could get help.
She was on a path in the middle of a wood. She could see a wisp of smoke emerging above the trees. It looked as though someone had a fire not too far away. Heading into the trees in the direction of the smoke, before too long she emerged in a clearing. In the centre of the clearing was the fire whose smoke she had seen. Around the fire sat:
