"What is the matter?" Sudukis asked. There was enough light for Astra (now
fully awake) to see that he looked alarmed. Esau was not with him.
Unaided, the blind man could not safely cross the deck - with its various
obstructions and hatches - except by going slowly and carefully, and
Sudukis had dashed to Astra's side as quickly as he could.
Feeling slightly ashamed of herself for panicking, she tried to keep any suggestion of a tremor out of her voice as she said: "It was just a nightmare. I am sorry to have disturbed you." But was it a genuine nightmare, she wondered. Or had someone imposed the vision on her? It was easy to interpret it as a warning against going to work for Lucius, suggesting that what initially seemed fair would prove to be the reverse. But who would have known that her working for the mage was a possibility, and who would want to try to prevent that? The likely answer to both questions was Esau, surely? If he was trying to manipulate her without her being aware of it, then it seemed that Lucius's warning about him might be justified. Not being aware of the nightmare's content, Sudukis assumed that it was probably the result of Lucius's attempting to communicate with her. "Would you like to tell me about it?" he asked.
