Magic users made the dragon nervous, in a way that straighforward warriors
did not. His scales would turn aside any blade, but a sufficiently
powerful spell
could harm or even kill him. Though Princess Exotica was still very much
a beginner when it came to magic, he had detected a potential in her that
might in time
cause him great trouble, a latent power that even she did not realise that
she
possessed. He decided that it would be wiser to take no chances. Since he
had her chained,
naked, to his dungeon wall, he could have killed her easily enough.
But to have done that when he had her at his mercy would have seemed
somehow
unsporting. The chivalric ideals of the time had influenced even an evil
creature like him
to that extent. So instead of killing her, he had banished her to where
she could do him no harm.
One moment, Exotica was languishing in a dark, dank dungeon. The next, she found herself somewhere where the light was very bright. She had to close her eyes against the glare; then she opened them again very slowly. As her vision adjusted, she saw that she was in an odd (to her perception) and unfamilar place:
