Ignoring the hooker, Fred and Astra look around them, gawping at all
the odd and enormous buildings (by their standards), and at the strange
machines that carry
people along the streets at a frightening pace (the traffic is for once
flowing
comparatively freely).
Whilst Fred and Astra gaze in wonder at their surroundings, by contrast the locals mostly ignore them. In New York one frequently saw far stranger sights than a man and a woman, one dressed as a medieval warrior and the other in a tattered gown, and both dripping wet. (Only minutes ago, they had been swimming across a lake. [4419]) "Where do you think we are?" Fred asks Astra. "Either this is a spell- induced illusion or it is somewhere exceedingly strange - but I have no idea where." Stopping a passer-by, they ask him where they are.
