Fred's Turn Begins

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 5941

The four-legged form of the centaur rushed at the thin undead opponent. At the last minute the vampire -which was wearing grey baggy pants and a loose shirt- leaped straight into the air. He rose nearly five feet while the startled creature below him kept on running. Even as the vampire landed back on its feet the centaur was on a second run; its four legs running speedily straight for its target, its two hands ready to grab hold and wrestle. The vampire ran to its left this time, the centaur followed. Suddenly the vampire did a roll to its right and dove under the centaur. The centaur began to stomp, hoping to trample the undead thing, but the vampire had already jumped upward, clawing the underbelly of the centaur and landing on its back. There ensued a wild and crazed dance with one creature trying desperately to buck the other, but to no avail. The undead thing that once was a man had a grip like a vise. Within moments it had worked its way up to the creature's neck and with a deft stroke, yanked on its head until it had broken its neck. Even as the beast crumple to the floor the vampire continued to pull and twist, and within a minute the centaur's head was ripped from off its neck.

And Fred had watched it all. He was mesmerized, he was dumbstruck, he was numb, he was... scared.

The spectators were yelling and screaming, the dust from the arena floor was as nothing compared to the dirt and filth flying from those watchers of these unholy combats. The entity returned to the raised dias. Its flesh seemed even more to steam and smoke, the rolling under its skin pulsed as if in call to some unseen movement by an unearthly moon. The metal around its waist shone in the illumination of the huge cave. It boomed out its voice again: "Friends! Wasn't that incredible? Wasn't that an awesome display of sheer strength and expertise?" It waited for the crowd to respond, the spectators were silent, not knowing whether to cheer or listen for more. "I can't HEAR you!"

Everyone broke out into applause and cheers and yells.

"SILENCE!" it cried out again. Eveyone did as was told. "For round two we have a treat, we have a trick! For our deadly undead shall face not another beast of the field, but a Man!"

The crowd began to boo and hiss until the entity quieted them again. "If our vampire wishes to meet the Dragon face to face it shall have to kill not just a Man, but a knight; not just a knight, but a Dragon-slayer! What an honor! What a glory! Death to the Dragon-slayer in veneration of the Dragon!!!"

The crowd went ballistic. They screeched and hissed, they clapped and screamed, they yelled and howled and grunted until they could do no more. And then Fred was led out to the center of the ring, his sword his only comfort. He eyed the undead face of his opponent. It had just fought against a great beast, the centaur, and yet it did not gasp for air, its lungs did not heave with effort, its arms and legs did not twitch with the least amount of tire: it was undead - air and food and sleep it needed not. Its only need was fresh drink.

Fred looked at the monster and hoped the thing had not dined any time recently.

  1. The clang of some far-off bell announces the fight commenced.
  2. With the clang of a bell the fight begins and Fred is close to losing when suddenly...
