Before doing anything else, Astra took a brief moment to grieve for the
girl, for a brief moment was all that she could spare. It was sad that she
should have died so young, but at least that was better than her probable
fate had she been taken prisoner. And she had died with honour, for in
spite of her youth and her obvious lack of skill in combat she had fought
bravely and fiercely. "You will be avenged," Astra vowed.
Her own wounds seemed to be no worse than superficial cuts, when she examined them. In spite of her skill, and the lack of it displayed by her opponents, she knew that she had been very lucky to get off so lightly against so many. But her luck was unlikely to last for much longer if she could not get help. She estimated that she was now some three miles from Croix Keep. That meant that it was another seven or so to Arras Keep. Could she find it without Andrea to guide her? Probably, even in this largely wooded countryside. Keeps were usually located so that they would have good sightlines, to minimise the risk of a surprise attack. (Not that it had done Croix Keep much good.) That meant that the keep itself could be seen from some distance away. Also, like Croix Keep, Arras Keep was likely to be surrounded by an area where the trees had been cleared for agriculture. So if Andrea had taken her in even vaguely the right direction, if she kept on the same heading then she ought to spot the keep. Of course there was a risk that it too might have been attacked and have fallen, in which case she would be walking into a trap, but was there any other alternative open to her?
