Letitia seems taken aback by your offer to slay the brigands, and her
mother is passive throughout the remainder of the meal. You instruct her
that you will get up early so as to get the advance on the brigands. She
tells you that they occupy a canyon not too far away. After eating, and a
brief sleep, she leads you through the moonlight to the thieves. She is of
fair form, and you feel sorry that so many as she have lost their brothers
and fathers in the bloody stuggles that have wrenched the region. After a few hours of walking uphill, you rest upon a peak gazing down into the valley below. At the bottom is a small stone enclosure, with walls about 8 feet high with a rampart for a man to walk about upon. The keep contains a pen for various livestock and horses, several wooden houses, and a medium size stone house toward the rear. "This is the place from which they operate," says Letitia. "They post a regular guard, but I am told that a knight of the king may slay many men with his sword." Though you are not an inexperienced fighter, you know that you will not be able to overtake this small fort by direct assault. Subterfuge may be in order here. Besides, they also might have roving patrols and take you in, or worse.
