It had never occurred to Ithamarastra not to attempt to mop up the spilt
wine. Back home, her mother had always made it clear that if you made a
mess then you were the one responsible for clearing it up, and that it
shouldn't be left to the servants, who had better things to do. Besides,
she knew that the longer the spill was left, the harder it would be to get
the stain out of the tablecloth. Still, it was Gilder's cloth, and if he
wasn't bothered about the stain then that was his prerogative.
As the dinner continued, she noticed that Gilder continued to give her a knowing smile every now and again. Why hadn't he had her arrested after she made her slip? Could she expect some sort of blackmail attempt once his other guests had departed? Having provided all of the samples that the Lady Aephi and her assistants needed, Ambassador Whickid had at long last been allowed to return to the Allarian Embassy, and had gone to bed. Though it was not that late, he felt very tired. Sleep would not come easily however, not least because he knew that the Embassy was surrounded by Aqualarian troops who were not permitting anyone to leave the building. He could only hope that the witch's mumbo-jumbo would show that he and the rest of his countrymen were blameless. ("Witch" was not a very respectful term, but it was how Allarians tended to think of magic users even at the best of times - and this was far from the best of times.) As it happened, the tests had produced what appeared to be contradictory results. The test on the fragment of flesh had indicated that the person responsible for the Princess's disappearance was a Lord Frederigo D'Honaire who, with a name like that, could only be an Allarian. But the test on the blood sample pointed to a well-known mage called Alain, whose specialty had been potions. The big snag with that result was that the mage was believed to have died several years ago. The Lady Aephi was not to know that, depending on your view of responsibility, either test could be viewed as being correct.
