Gilder's Condition

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 58986

Governor Gilder was not sure that the Allarian was telling the truth, or at least not the whole truth. But from what he had seen and heard so far he was sure of one thing: this rather pathetic specimen of manhood was clearly no spy and posed no threat to himself or to Hespan. Therefore there seemed little point in questioning him further, especially as his story conveniently fitted in with what the Governor had in mind.

"Though I am using my discretion in this matter to let you go," he told Fred, "I obviously cannot condone the continuation of this woman's indefinite servitude. So the condition is that you cannot take her with you."

He turned to Astra: "My dear, I do not hold it against you that the story which you told me initially was a false one. No doubt you were frightened, though needlessly so. For I am happy to inform you that you are now free of your slavery - for what is 'indefinite servitude' but slavery by a fancy name. I realise that now you are no longer working for this man you have nowhere to stay tonight, nor any money with which to buy food or accommodation. But you need not worry on that score, for I am happy for you to stay in the palace free of charge for as long as you wish."

And perhaps for much longer than I would wish? Astra wondered. She had little knowledge of men, having been brought up in an almost wholly female environment, but she did know that very few of them were to be trusted.

  1. Prudence dictated that she should pretend to be grateful, however. "That's very kind of you," she said.
  2. "I'm sorry," she said, "but I can't take you up on your generous offer." "Are you sure? You see, as someone with no visible means of support you would be liable to arrest for vagrancy."
