The two seamen rowed Astra, Esau and Sudukis over to Sudukis's ship, which
was at anchor about half a mile away. "There she is," Sudukis said,
pointing at the vessel illuminated by the moon. "The Spitfire. An
appropriate name, though it is no more than a coincidence. You may not
think that she is very grand, Astra Dragon, but she is the swiftest ship
in our fleet, and Esau needed to get here before you could be sold.
Besides, if a major warship had been sent, that might have alerted certain
people that something was up, and we preferred them to remain in
ignorance. If they should subsequently find out from the captain of the
Stony Brook that you have been sold to us, that is of no concern
however, since they will never catch us once we have set sail."
"If a powerful mage wanted me, might he not try magic against your ship from a distance?" "He might try, but trying and succeeding are two different things. I don't know much about magic, but I do know that the greater the distance between the spellcaster and the object of his spell, the smaller the chance of success. And besides, we have Esau to protect us." "That is reassuring." Astra asked no further questions, for the boat had arrived at the ship. Sudukis and the seamen helped Esau and herself to clamber aboard. Not that Astra really needed their help, but brought up as a princess she knew that it would be rude to refuse a proferred courtesy. "It is very late," Sudukis said.
