Fred, I am your father!

"Huh?" said Fred finally. "What the hell are you talking about?"

"I'm your father, Fred," squeaked the lizard.

"No you're not!"

1. "You're right," the dragon laughed, "I'm not. But I had you confused there for a minute, didn't I?"
2. "You're right," it replied, "I'm not. But my little trick absorbed your attention just long enough for my minions to creep up behind you."
3. "It's true," said the reptile. "You see, many years ago..."
4. Without waiting for a reply, Fred slashed at the beast with his sword.
