Exploration of the eastnorthern passage

Fred and Astra set off into the oddly named eastnorth passage. Soon, they
found that this passage went on for quite a bit. Later, they discovered
even more of the passage. And finally, they reached a part where the
passage continued.
Fred stopped, and made a mark in the wall of the passage. "In case we get lost" he explained to Astra. She pointed out that it would be hard to get lost when the passage just seemed to go on without any other possible choices than "forward". Fred just shrugged and said "eh". Thus, they continued deeper into the passage. After a while, they reached a set of stairs that lead down to an elaborately-carved door of thick wood. It was unlocked. Fred opened it, and on the other side... the passage continued. As they went onward, the passage started to turn slightly left, but then went back to completely straight. Finally, the author ran out of ideas on how to repeat that they were walking along the same damn passage, so something exciting finally happened.
