the journey to Helsingdon, which - Henri told Astra - should take them
about a week. In fact there was enough food to leave a substantial
proportion with the men who would be staying behind.
Before he and Astra left, Henri gave instructions to the sergeant. "It may be some time before they miss the two horses. Even then, they will probably assume that they got loose and wandered away. It's much too far on foot for you to join up with any other government forces, so you will have to remain here. Under cover of darkness, set their horses free, set light to their supply wagons and that sort of thing. In about eight or nine days time, with any luck you'll see an attack on the enemy by a dragon. You should have enough food to last you till then." "And if you aren't able to arrange that dragon attack?"
