Perhaps Avala was telling the truth, Fred reflected. Surely the gem must
have some strange power. Why else would he have smashed the vase to get at
it, when only a moment before he had been unwilling to deprive the vase's
owner of it? But he could understand Velus being suspicious of the
princess's motives, and thinking that she wanted the jewel for herself.
"Look," he told them both, "our absolute priority must be to kill the dragon. To do that we must trust each other and work together. Velus, I believe Avala. Avala, Velus is my friend, and I am not going to chase him away. Now, will you two agree to try to get along with each other?"
