"I guess I've been a knight for as long as I can remember," Fred continues
with a sigh. "I mean, I got my first sword when I was nine, but even
before then I was wrapping my chest in tin foil and storming the cat's
litter box."
He takes a puff on a cigarette and squints at the ceiling. "At 13 I got interested in girls, of course. That was pretty normal, except none of my friends understood why I kept calling them damsels. As I got older, I could hardly even muster any interest in a girl unless she was at least late for work or had a broken nail...some sort of distress. Really, I spent most of my teens just reading armor magazines and practicing jousting in the back yard. "At nineteen my family took a vacation to the Caribbean and I slayed an iguana. Twenty, bought my first steed. A noble one." Several heads nodded understandingly. "Twenty-one, I left home to seek my fortune. Had a few duels. The usual. I worked my way up the ladder until I was the bravest knight in my kingdom. I never once realized what I was doing to myself...and my family." A tear trickles down his cheek. "I'm so sorry..."
