Astra had heard of the Land of Nod, but had dismissed it
as the stuff of children's stories. She was surprised to
discover that the Prince of Nod really existed. Was she
in his realm now? She supposed that she must be.
The note was not very helpful, she thought. How was she supposed to combat an "evil not of this world", especially with no information on how to find this evil or recognise it once it was found? A more specific description of what she was looking for than "foul beast" would have been useful. And just how was she supposed to remain awake indefinitely? It was cold here, which would help, but sooner or later she would need to sleep. As for smoking the paper, she had never been a smoker, and also she had reservations about taking stimulants that she knew nothing about. In any case, she didn't have anything to light the paper with. Before she decided on which way to go, Astra thought she would investigate what was behind the curtain. Perhaps she would find something of interest. Lifting up one corner, she slipped between it and the wall. As she had expected, she found a window. Through it she saw a bleak snow-covered landscape. She shivered. If it was cold indoors, it would be even colder outside. If she was to venture out, she would have even greater need of her new outfit: underwear, long woollen stockings, long gray woollen dress, fur-trimmed cloak with a high collar, fur-lined boots, mittens and fur hat. Next to the window was a door. Astra could see that there was a line of footprints in the snow:
