The two men came into Astra's view when they were only about thirty paces
away, as the horse rounded a bend in the trail. She wondered whether she
and Hesht had made the right choice about how to deal with them. These two
looked like ruffians - and fit and strong ones, too. "Do you recognise
them?" she asked Hesht.
"N-no. I've never seen them around Still M-manor. B-but I don't know everyone." As the horse approached, Gog readied his short sword, stood up and took a position in the middle of the trail. He thought it unlikely that these two were working for Ghermiz - the intelligence they had had about his operation had not mentioned any women working as couriers - but it should be possible to have some fun with them. They might have something worth stealing in addition to the horse, which seemed quite a good specimen. And the woman, in spite of her strange hair coloration, was quite a looker. If she was unwilling to be co-operative, then he could demonstrate to Magog exactly how a woman should be treated. He wasn't worried about the law. In this wild country, might was right. Magog picked up his quarterstaff, and took up position a couple of paces behind his colleague.
