Fred whispered to Exotica: "If I can creep up on him while he sleeps, with any luck I can deal him a mortal blow before he wakes up." "Can your sword cut through his scales?" asked Exotica. "I don't know, though it's made of the finest steel. However, I shall aim to strike through his eye-socket into his brain, that way avoiding the scales."

So Fred crept forward, whilst Exotica watched from the edge of the cavern with her fingers crossed.

  1. All went according to plan, and Fred despatched the dragon with a single blow.
  2. Fred blinded the dragon in one eye but failed to kill him. He now faced a badly hurting and seriously angry dragon.
  3. When Fred was about three paces away, the dragon lazily opened one eye and said: "Hello, Fred. And Exotica too! How nice of you both to drop by."
