Exotica opened her eyes and found that she was outside of the walls of
the King’s castle. Mary the chamber maid was by her side. The night was
black, there was no moon out and the stars seemed obscured. And though
it was late and most of the people of Caemlyn should have been asleep, a
large crowd was gathered nearby. And the sentinel’s bells were ringing.
And the air was heavy with fear and dread.
A man rushed forward and helped the princess up. Exotica turned toward him and saw that it was Sir Toby, one of her father’s captains. “Princess, oh thank the gods that you escaped!” Exotica was still bewildered by all that had happened to her, but it was clear to her now that the attack by the demon-thing had not gone unnoticed by those outside of her father’s castle. Looking up at the walls of that mighty citadel, Exotica quickly understood why. The stones of the castle were streaked with sickly green veins and glistened with some kind of viscous sweat. Red flashes shimmered behind the windows of the palace, like baleful eyes blinking from a cold, hard face. And a thick, oily smoke was billowing from the summit of the top-most tower; smoke as black as death. “What’s happening?!” a frightened voice shouted. “Is this the work of the dragon?!” another cried out. Exotica turned to face her frightened subjects, but found that she could give them no comfort; only the pitiless, cruel truth. “No my people, this is not the handiwork of the dread dragon. This is something far, far worse. A demon has come upon us and taken yon castle for its evil lair, and all those who dwelt within it.“ Her words struck the people speechless, their spirits sinking down into despair. Exotica ached for them, yearned to lighten the nightmare that they all now shared in. But what could she do?
